This is traditional Persian classical music, it is very beautiful and well done. Bijan Bijani is almost unknown outside of Iran, which is a shame as he is a very talented musician, and because it makes procuring high quality rips very difficult. Though the album Chahar Fasl seems to be in 320. Nevertheless, the other two albums in 128kbps will be sufficient until better ones become available.
Various Persian music sites list his discography as being about ten albums, yet these three are the only ones that I have been able to find real downloads for. Much of his other material can be streamed from these sites, but at around 78kbps it is almost not worth it. Here are 3 albums (4 CDs) of Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Recordings. I would describe the "Musical Caravan" as a collection of folk music and the Silk Road Ensemble as a fusion of folk and modern classical. Every musician heard here is a virtuoso, but be advised, this is not for the casual listener!

The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan

"What if Marco Polo had owned tape recorder?" This intriguing concept is raised in the liner notes to this impressive two-CD set, which wanders along ancient Asian trade routes known as the Silk Road. The first disc, Masters & Traditions, deals with formal styles performed by and for sophisticated connoisseurs. Meanwhile, the music on Minstrels and Lovers is played by amateurs who are part of daily life and thus reach a wider audience. The imaginary caravan passes through Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Afghanistan, encountering nomads, mystics, and bards along the way. The instruments are scratchy, pungent, and/or serene, while the singers weave a potent spell out of a millennium's worth of slow-changing rural and urban vistas. In the opening essay, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the project's artistic director, pleads for intercultural communication and empathy. This compilation provides an exotic, brave, entertaining first step in that direction.

When Strangers Meet - The Silk Road Project

This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments. Ma, who participates in every piece either as soloist or part of the ensemble, plays cello and a Mongolian "horse-head fiddle." There is also a Mongolian soprano, who sings a traditional song native to her region. For the uninitiated Western listener, the music requires some getting used to. Much of it is based on rhythmic ostinatos. The melodies use Oriental scales; the intonation is untempered; the music seems all color, texture, and atmosphere, without what might be called themes; and repetition takes the place of development. Contrast is achieved through sudden change, buildup by adding instruments. However, the music is often beautiful, delicate, dreamy, or peaceful; every listener will find his or her own favorite pieces. The playing is splendid, with much inventive improvisation. Inevitably, Ma's tone and personality stand out, but he never dominates in fact or spirit. The booklet offers essays by Ma and the project's musicologist, Theodore Levin, photographs of the players, and drawings of the Eastern instruments.

Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon

It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague.

In Iran: A Cinematographic Revolution, Nader Takmil Homayoun situates the development of Iran�s internationally acclaimed national cinema relative to the broad political social and religious events that conditioned it, from the mid-sixties to the present. The strength of this remarkable documentary lies in its strategy of using the history of the image as a means of exploring the shaping of ideology, contrasting documentary news footage of historical events with the social reality portrayed by the contemporary film images. Drawing upon a wide catalogue of films and newsreel footage, the documentary offers an insight into the two revolutions � political and artistic � and their joint battle to produce, and consequently control, the national imago. Commentary from a wide selection of Iranian directors affords the viewer an opportunity to understand and interpret the various modes of representation in terms of the ideological conflicts at play in their production.
The development of an Iranian cinematic language is shown as emerging from its early dependency upon western genres and style in the sixties and early seventies, to focus upon questions of realism � specifically the need to portray the social problems and everyday struggles of the ordinary Iranian, which had been previously excluded from representation. This move to document a specific, local reality, instead of replicating a generic, imported fantasy, is linked to the socio-political agenda of specific filmmakers, as we see in Ghafari�s depiction of the life of the underclasses in �South of the City�, and Shirdel�s (1965) documentary sequence shot on the streets of Tehran, neither of which made it to the screen. The gap between officially sanctioned filmic representations, depicting (westernised) lifestyles of power and affluence, and the everyday reality of the majority of Iranians, is proposed as a key factor in shaping the �poetic-realist� trend that came to characterise the New Wave directors such as Mehrjui, Ghaffari, Kimiai, Golestan, and Kiarostami.
The prescient films of Kimiai (�The Journey of the Stone�) and Beyazi (�Downpour�) captured the growing mood of political dissent and the increasing emphasis on religion, foreshadowing the imminent 1979 revolution. Homayoun captures the moral backlash against cinema that followed, documenting the burning of cinema houses, while making clear that it was the overtly sensationalist nature of the majority of mainstream films that occasioned this attack. The importance of cinema as an ideological tool, recognised early on by Khomeni (�we are not against cinema, we are against what is ungodly�) set the stage for the cultivation of a properly Islamic cinema, guided by the Ministry for Cultural Affairs and the Farabi Foundation, giving rise to �greenhouse� or �pasteurised� cinema � with Mehrjui�s �The Cow� serving as the model. The intricate balance between the sanctioned image and its subversion is skilfully brought out by the filmmaker, as he situates the cinematic output relative to the shifts in political and religious boundaries, using newsreel and photographs to document the context within which the directors were working. The 1980-88 war with Iraq is presented as a particularly fraught site of contestation. Homayoun sets news footage of the conflict against official filmic representations that offered a blend of mysticism and heroism designed to rouse citizens to becomes willing martyrs to the cause, balanced by the attempts of film makers such as Naderi to present alternative, unvarnished depictions of the conflict.
The final section of the documentary takes on questions of censorship, allowing the post-revolutionary directors such as Makhmalbaf, Naderi, Panahi, Ghobadhi and Bani-Etemad to discuss their own ways of working within the constraints of the new republic. The initial struggle to construct an authentic national imago is reframed as a need to go beyond what has come to define Iranian cinema aesthetics, namely, its use of child actors, the emphasis on traditional values, the depiction of nature, and its strong connections with Persian poetry. Contemporary Iranian films characteristically draw upon the conventions of neo-realism and documentary in order to question the politics of representation, playing with the historical use of the image for ideological ends - both imperialist and revolutionary - as well as its capacity to reflect reality and work as a catalyst for social change. However, this dichotomy becomes the reflexive root of Iranian cinematic practice, as scenes from Makhmalbaf�s �Salaam Cinema� emphasize. The success of the domestic film industry, at home and abroad, is shown to have kindled an infatuation with the film imago, evidenced by the thousands of hopeful starlets that turn up to Makhmalbaf�s open casting session � the same hoards that decades earlier were burning down cinemas now audition as facsimiles of the same Hollywood icons Iranian cinema set out to displace. On the one hand, this speaks to the successful resolution of the struggle to construct a national cinematic identity, as Makhmalbaf claims: �Ideology blinded us � when you take off the blindfold you say �Ah � that�s who I am!� On the other hand, the documentary adroitly shows that although the development of Iranian cinema is closely conditioned by its historical circumstances, the power of the image still remains under the sway of a global politics of representation.

"Shirin" takes the film-the-audience conceit of "Where Is My Romeo?," Kiarostami's three-minute segment of the 2007 anthology "To Each His Own Cinema," and expands it into a 92-minute film. Admittedly, the viewership for such a self-reflective exercise will prove smaller than that for Kiarostami's more mainstream oeuvre. But in contrast with the wind and water in his minimalist "Five," the women's faces here tell a compelling story, indirectly implying or reconstructing the unseen narrative.

The play, told in telescoping flashbacks, concerns a love triangle between an Iranian king, an Armenian queen and an Iranian sculptor. Yet the offscreen spectacle remains a mystery since, like the perversely elaborate, stagebound Busby Berkeley numbers in "Footlight Parade," Kiarostami's production is improbably rich in sound effects that hardly seem theater-friendly: Crows caw, full orchestras play, armies clash, brooks babble, and noble steeds gallop, neigh and whinny.

Meanwhile the women, each individually framed by an immobile camera against empty seats or with other women (and an occasional man) partly visible in the soft-focus background, form a brilliantly composed, sensually vibrant visual text. All the Sturm und Drang of the offscreen pageantry functions as mere pretext for the richness of emotions that flit across their watching faces. Kiarostami fabricates a fascinating tension between film narrative and film imagery, the spectators' closeups simultaneously reading as a ghostly reflection of theatrical artifice and as the story itself.

In reality, the different actresses were shot facing an abstract, blank space with three dots and told to imagine an incident or movie. Later, dialogue and sound effects were crafted and the whole audiovisual interrelationship painstakingly edited together after the fact.

Like "Ten," "Shirin" comes across as inescapably feminist, suggesting Kiarostami's personal stake in employing Iranian actresses whose talents he has never before tapped. The film also tips toward feminism in that the younger, prettier faces are not necessarily the ones that capture the eye. Juliette Binoche, bare of makeup and draped in a drab veil, appears almost more Iranian than the Iranians.
